Despite finding no fault in Jesus, Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea, bowed to the pressure of the crowd and sentenced Jesus to death by crucifixion. He was brutally flogged and forced to carry his cross to the hill of Golgotha, where he was nailed to the cross and left to die alongside two criminals.
